Extended Storage for Gasoline Golf Cars

Preparing the gasoline golf car for extended storage:

  1. Unload the golf car so that tires are supporting only the weight of the golf car.
  2. Store golf car in a cool, dry place. This will minimize battery self-discharge. If the battery appears to be weak, have it charged by a trained technician. (Use an automotive-type 12-volt battery charger rated at 10 amps or less.)
  3. Seal the fuel tank.
    • A. Fill fuel tank, and, following manufacturer's directions, add a commercially available fuel stabilizer.
    • B. Disconnect fuel vent line from fuel tank vent nipple.
    • C. Plug the fuel tank vent nipple so that it is airtight. Use a slip-on vinyl cap. NOTE: It is not necessary to drain the fuel line.
  4. Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s)
  5. Battery should be clean and free of corrosion. Wash top and terminals of battery with a solution of 1 cup baking soda per 1 gallon of water. Rinse solution off battery. Do not allow this solution to enter the battery. Let the terminals dry and then coat them with Battery Terminal Protector Spray.
  6. To protect the engine, remove spark plug and pour 0.5 fluid ounce of SAE 10 weight oil into the engine through the spark plug hole. Rotate engine crankshaft by hand several times and then install the spark plug and tighten it to proper torque.
  7. Adjust tires to recommended tire pressure.
  8. Perform semi-annual periodic lubrication.
  9. Thoroughly clean front body, rear body, seats, engine compartment, and underside of golf car.
  10. Do not engage the park brake. Chock the wheels to prevent the golf car from rolling.

Returning the stored gasoline golf car to service

  1. Restore the fuel systems to operation.
    • A. Remove the plug from the fuel tank vent.
    • B. Connect the vent tube to the fuel tank vent.
  2. Connect battery and spark plug wire(s).
  3. Place the Forward/Reverse handle in the NEUTRAL position and if your gasoline golf car has a neutral lockout switch, place it in the MAINTENANCE position, if applicable.
  4. Crank the engine until fuel is pumped into the fuel injector and fuel lines and the engine starts.
  5. Turn the engine off and if applicable, return the neutral lockout switch to the OPERATE position.
NOTE: Due to the oil added to the engine in preparation for storage, engine may smoke excessively for a short time when it is run for the first time after storage.
  6. Adjust tires to recommended tire pressure.
